How to Change the Calculator's Look with Themes

We put a lot of care into how the calculator looks, because a tool you use to make real money should feel like it respects your attention. For most of its life the calculator had one look: a warm cream background, crimson accents, and a serif headline font. We still think that is the right default, and it still is the default. But "right for us" is not the same as "right for everyone." A few people told us the warm palette was not their taste, so we added themes.

A theme changes the look and nothing else. It restyles the colors, the fonts, the roundness of the corners, and the surfaces behind your inputs. It does not touch a single number. Your recommended price, your cost breakdown, your enrollment scenarios, and your tier math come out identical in every theme. Switching is purely cosmetic, and you can change it as often as you like.

1 Find the Theme Picker

Look at the header bar across the top of the calculator. Just left of the Simple/Advanced toggle there is a small dropdown labeled Theme. Open it and you will see six choices. Pick one and the whole tool restyles instantly. There is no save button and no reload.

Mode note: The theme picker works the same in both Simple and Advanced mode. Theme and mode are separate settings: one controls how the tool looks, the other controls how much of the toolkit is on screen.

Lander is our own look: warm cream, crimson, and Georgia headlines. It is what the calculator has always been, and it stays the default for anyone who has not changed it.

Studio keeps the warm cream feeling but swaps crimson for a near-black accent and rounds the corners a little more. Crisp is the most minimal of the set: a plain white canvas, near-black accents, and clean hairline borders. Slate sits on white with soft warm-grey cards and a calm blue accent. Ember is our own warm dark theme, with a deep-walnut background and cream text instead of the usual cold gray, so it is easy on the eyes in a dim studio or late at night. Sunset is warm and editorial: a cream-yellow canvas, a saturated orange accent, and serif headlines over a deep-orange header bar.

Studio, Crisp, and Slate take their cues from design systems you may already know (Clay, Cal.com, and Notion), and Sunset from Mistral AI's warm sunset look. They are our reading of those looks, not copies of them.

3 Your Choice Is Remembered

The calculator remembers your theme in your own browser, the same way it remembers whether you last used Simple or Advanced mode. Choose Slate once and it will be Slate every time you open the file on that computer, until you pick something else. As with everything in this tool, that preference lives only on your machine. In fact the whole calculator now runs with no outside connections at all: the fonts are bundled right inside the download, so nothing about your work, your numbers, or even which theme you picked ever leaves your computer.

4 Your Printout Follows Your Theme

Your theme carries into print. If you live in Slate, your printed report shows Slate's blue on the headers, the price, and the totals, so it is easy to tell at a glance whose report you are holding. Two things stay put, though. The page itself always prints on white to save your ink, even in the dark Ember theme, so you never get a wall of toner. And the colors that carry meaning never move: a profit is green and a loss is red on every printout, in every theme, because those are signals about your money, not decoration.

5 One Honest Note

Clay, Cal.com, and Notion each use a custom typeface we are not able to ship, so Studio, Crisp, and Slate all use Inter instead, a close and freely licensed stand-in that we bundle inside the download. If you know the originals well, you will spot the difference. We would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Ember is our own warm take on a dark theme, not a copy of anyone's.
